Abstract/Description: The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and the Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) were awarded CALFED funds in 1997 for the acquisition and start-up stewardship, including preparation of long-term
management and monitoring plans, on lands acquired within the Sacramento River Conservation Area (as defined by SB 1086). A steering committee was formed among the award recipients to make consensus decisions regarding implementation of the project. Stakeholder input was sought to identify information needs (e.g. public use and access) to be addressed as part of the management planning process for the acquired lands. Hydraulic modeling was identified as a priority to evaluate the potential third party impacts of large-scale conservation strategies in the context of other uses of the floodplain. Ayres Associates was hired to conduct the modeling. TNC’s role was to develop and provide Ayres Associates with the data input required for the modeling exercise.
