Title: Possible effects of the Cantara spill on amphibian populations of the upper Sacramento River. |
Abstract/Description: Three years after a metam sodium herbicide spill, amphibian species richness on aquatic plots was significantly lower on the Sacramento River than at reference sites on nearby tributaries and the Trinity, Salmon, and Smith rivers. Pacific giant salamanders, Dicamptodon tenebrosus, accounted for 88% of all sightings at all locations. The proportion of plots with this species was lower on the Sacramento River than on reference sites at all sampling times (4 months and 1, 2, and 3 years post-spill). Abundance-habitat relationships predicted that Pacific giant salamander density was 0.001 individuals/m2 before the spill. Three years after the spill, populations were still 93% lower than this estimate. Amphibian species richness on terrestrial plots was not significantly different between the Sacramento River and the reference tributaries at either 4 or 6 months post-spill. Ensatina, Ensatina eschscholtzii, accounted for 87% of all sightings. The number of ensatina per plot was greater on the Sacramento River than on the tributaries 6 months post-spill. Ensatina number and species richness on terrestrial plots increased with distance from the spill site at both sample times. Elevation, number of large trees, and area of downed logs accounted for 38% (spring 1992) to 66% (winter 1991) of the variation in ensatina number.
